An account of the resource
The broad collection of "Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences" highlights those women who dared in the areas of the arts (visual and performing), the humanities (philosophy, law, history, literature, religion, languages, communication), and the social sciences ( anthropology, archaeology, sociology, economics, psychology, political science). It also includes female intellectuals who were excluded from formal methods of education, but who advanced our collective knowledge of the aforementioned fields. Each of the fields represented started off as a male-dominated field. Although women have integrated all of these areas, they are still not representative in many such as religion, political science, law, economics, psychology, archaeology, history, and so on. This collection hopes to expand the readers' knowledge of women in these subjects and encourage their further study by women.

Von Bora was a one-time Catholic nun turned wife of Martin Luther, the great Protestant reformer. Katherine’s most dramatic act of “misbehavior” occurred when she led several of her fellow nuns to escape their convent hidden in fish barrels inside a covered wagon. While many men sought her hand in marriage, Katherine insisted that only Luther would do and, having won him over, the two married in 1525. Katherine oversaw their growing family and ran several business ventures that allowed Luther to continue his work as a Protestant reformer.

Biographical Text
Born Anne Marbury, Hutchinson was a pioneer and preacher who called for equality and rights for women. Her strong religious convictions were at odds with the established Puritan clergy in Massachusetts. She dared to step out of the cultural confines of the time by holding prayer sessions in her home and following a version of Protestantism that would allow believers more power to have direct access to their god through prayer. Anne was tried in 1638 by the General Court of Massachusetts for, as she was told, “step[ping] out of your place…[being a husband rather than wife, a preacher than a hearer, a magistrate than a subject.” She was eventually banished from the colony.

Born Amadine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, she later changed her name to George Sand so she could have her newspaper articles and novels published. After she retired, she wrote a 20-volume bibliography expressing sexual freedom, equal rights for women, and urging an end to arranged marriages. A famous quote from George suggests her liberal views of romantic relationships, which caused some scandal in her own time, “Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved.”

Harriet Beecher Stowe was an author and noted abolitionist. One of her most influential works, <em>Uncle Tom's Cabin</em>, greatly increased knowledge of the horrors of slavery. The book went on to be the most popular novel of the 19th century. In all, she wrote over 20 books. After the end of slavery in the United States, Stowe campaigned for married women's rights arguing that married women should have ownership of their property (women's property became that of their husbands) and be able to engage in contracts. She noted the inherent unfairness that under the law a married woman had no legal existence.

Bingen was a medieval abbess, mystic, composer, and author. Hildegard of Bingen began receiving visions at a young age, but kept quiet for fear of how those visions would be interpreted. As an adult, Hildegard became head of her monastic community at Bingen in present-day Germany and began writing music for her nuns to sing as prayer. She wrote a medical treatise for her community as well as recording her visions after receiving encouragement. She became an important cultural figure whose advice was sought after by the movers and shakers of her day. She has been called the Sibyl of the Rhine.

Description

Biographical Text
A Greek philosopher who was also the first woman to be well-documented in the field of mathematics. She was the head of the Platonist School in Alexandria, where she also taught philosophy and astronomy. Her beliefs encouraged logic and mathematical study in place of empirical inquiry, and strongly enforced the need for governing laws in society. She was eventually killed by a mob after she was accused of exacerbating a political conflict in Alexandria.

Journalist, industrialist
Biographical Text
Nellie Bly was the penname of Elizabeth Jane Cochrane. As a teenager, Cochrane wrote a letter to the editor of the local Pittsburgh paper to refute a misogynistic article that the paper had printed. The editor was impressed with her writing and offered her a job. Her first story focused on the plight of working women. Eventually, Joseph Pulitzer of the <em>New York World</em> newspaper heard of her writing and offered her a position at this paper. Cochrane faked insanity in front of a judge and went undercover to expose the real story of how patients at asylums were treated. Her investigate journalistic style was original for the time. After Jules Verne published <em>Around the World in 80 Days</em>, Cochrane left on a trip and did it in 72—just to prove that it could be done. She investigated prison conditions and her writing was a boon to social reformers. After marriage in 1895, she left writing for some time. It was thought unseemly for married women of a certain status to work outside the home. Her husband died in 1904 and Cochrane became one of the leading female industrialists of the time. She went back to writing and covered the Woman Suffrage Parade of 1913. She then reported from the Eastern European front in World War I. She died in 1922.<br /><br />"I always had a desire to know asylum life more thoroughly-a desire to be convinced that the most helpless of God's creatures, the insane, were cared for kindly and properly."--Nellie Bly<br /><br />"People of the world can never imagine the length of days to those in asylums. They seemed neverending, and we welcomed any event that might give us something to think about as well as talk of." --Nellie Bly<br /><br /><em>Ten Days in a Mad-House</em> by Nellie Bly: <a href="http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/bly/madhouse/madhouse.html">http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/bly/madhouse/madhouse.html<br /><br /><br /></a>
